gig reviews... where the hell has tart been lately? Grand Atlantic @Martyrs and JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound @The Tonic Room

Well darlings, I’ve been out and about and not told you all the juicy details. Who deserves a spanking? :)

Tuesday night brought me four lovely Aussie men (and their lovely manager.) Grand Atlantic and I have been in touch for ever so long and I had my first chance to see them play live. At long last I could hear this album that I loved, expanded and elaborated on and well, just livened up. In the car on the way over to Martyrs Phil was singing under his breath… I knew what he was up to, I’d been around singers before. So I asked him, “Do you ever forget the words?” his answer, “Well yeah, that’s what I’m doing now, going over the words to a new song, a song we’ve never played live before!” Excellent news!

Martyrs is an excellent club to play. The stage is really large, the atmosphere is nice and the owner and booker are just excellent people. Phil reported having a great conversation with them after the show. Opening for the evening was a band out of Ireland, Autumn Owls. They were melodramatic in a positive way, moody and very talented. Following them came Gidgets Ga Ga, who delivered their usual high-powered power-pop performance. This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve seen Mic and Zac and Leslie on stage and they are consistently energetic and entertaining.

Grand Atlantic performed most of their new album, How We Survive, plus a few great ones from their previous record, This Is Grand Atlantic. And as I was promised in the car, they did an excellent cover of the Replacements’ “Left Of The Dial.” The live performance of songs like “She’s a Dreamer” and “Tripwire” were exactly as I imagined: heavy bass, driving rhythm (and oh lordy does Von Diehm hit that kick drum hard!) and Phil’s positively electrifying vocals. I stood with their manager, Joe and enjoyed the show, wowed with every song. Talking to Morgan afterward about his guitar and effects pedals, I was struck by how guitar-driven this group is. Morgan’s way of weaving in and out of whatever it is that Phil is playing or singing helps create the signature GA sound, with Sean, all the while providing a steady but interesting bass line. You all know my weakness for bass players; Sean’s work that night did not disappoint. Folks, the bottom line is that Grand Atlantic is a solid rock and roll band. There’s no gimmicks, no pretense of rock stardom to distract from the basic draw of their music. The new song they premiered, “Carved From Stone” was a bit rawer, had more depth to it than what I found on How We Survive. I anticipate the new record will reflect their move in this direction as they mature as a band and gel more as four people, working together on one great project after the next.

Thursday night I shuffled off to see JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound play at the Tonic Room. You’ve heard their cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” right? I vowed to go check this out the second I listened to that. And, happily I was not disappointed. The smallness of the Tonic Room was a wonderful atmosphere to really feel the heat of JC Brooks. This man is more than a singer, he PERFORMS! With a backing band of saxaphone, trumpet, trombone, electric bass, guitar, drums and keyboards, JC held sway over all that noise with the finesse of a circus ringleader. There was no doubt who was in control that night. Giving us at least 10 songs, this band exhausted themselves for their art. When I talked briefly to JC after the show the first thing he asked me was “Were ya dancing?” and I had to reply that yes, indeed I was! You cannot listen to this modern soul music without getting up out of your seat. His falsetto is strong, his body is in constant motion.  And his ballads are beautiful and long and drawn out for the pure anticipation of it, in the finest tradition of soul music. I was entranced, despite the end of the bar talkers.

The moment he broke into “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” the crowd joined in. The chorus of that song was loud and raucous that night and I looked around and felt the future for this band and for this talented signer. I asked him how many times he had sung that song at the Tonic Room, “One time, just tonight” he replied, “They all saw the video online.” This is catching on like wildfire. A month from now there will be no putting it out and JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound will be playing everywhere.

She’s A Dreamer mp3

Tuesday rapidly approaches and I’m wildly excited about Grand Atlantic coming to play for us here in Chicago. Their 2009 release, How We Survive has enjoyed a lot of blogger love. It will soon explode onto the U.S. music scene and begin to enjoy a whole lot more. Grand Atlantic have found their groove; they’ve crafted the perfect combination of hooks, riffs and at times, wistful vocals to woo audiences across this country. Their current tour is proving just that. And toward the end of this month thousands will hear it confirmed at SXSW. You will be convinced of what this blogger already knows: Grand Atlantic is on an unstoppable ride in one direction and that direction is most certainly UP.

How We Survive is rife with memorable melodies that hearken back to some of the great tunes of the Monkees or some of the early work of REM (“Last Train to Clarksville” is a song that I can easily see this band coming up with.) But far from being a cover band, Grand Atlantic weaves keen lyrics into musically complex songs that somehow retain a real accessibility. At just the right time, horns emerge in the title track, “How We Survive” and then quickly disappear. Twelve tracks give a good view of the wide talent this quartet holds. Backing harmonies are melodic and thoughtfully placed in songs that range in style from gritty garage rock to pure pop. Morgan Hann and Phil Usher handle some mean guitars on “Holding Pattern,”and “These Are The Times,” especially, taking short moments to show some flair. Throughout this record, Usher’s vocals range from pure good rock-n-roll cockiness to a more sensitive,  acoustic-style rasp; it’s just all good. And then, the last song, “Don’t Say Goodnight” brings it all down to a rather sweet, lullabye-like ending. As How We Survive finds a home with indie audiences in the US  Grand Atlantic is here to give it a face. Watch out for this up and coming band. You heard it here first. xoxo

US Tour

Coast Is Clear mp3 Grand Atlantic How We Survive

I’ve been emailing with Joe, manager of the Grand Atlantic, for a while now about getting this band to SXSW and then to Chicago and yes! It’s happening! Go see this band, you will not regret it. They have been getting major radio play in Australia and I know once they hit the US they are going to really take off. I’ve been in love with this album since I heard it last summer. xoxo

“…most of the songs recall the time when bands like Teenage Fanclub, the Posies, Redd Kross and Velvet Crush made power pop with enough sonic muscle to rival the grunge band…How We Survive is highly recommended…”(Underneathica, USA)

Described by Ripple as molding the “psychedelic post-punk ethereal moods of their countrymen, The Church, with the shoegazing swirling madbeat of The Stone Roses”, Brisbane Australia’s Grand Atlantic will release How We Survive on March 9th, 2010 through Laughing Outlaw Records with a SXSW showcase on March 18th and 20th.

A swaggering rhythm section in tow, Grand Atlantic combines crunchy riffs and chiming, Byrds-esque guitars, welded seamlessly to robust pop songs with instantly-memorable choruses. Lyrically, the new album attempts to reconcile lead singer Phil Usher’s feelings on mortality and loss, self-belief vs. self-doubt, and the challenges of living in this modern world. If that all sounds too serious, don’t be put off – these songs are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and Usher delivers an uplifting set of pop gems that can stand proudly beside the best in the genre. Usher says “The title of the album deals with how people particularly in our Western society get by from Sunday to Sunday and the differences and contrasts that people from diverse cultures experience. What someone in our city considers a tough time is completely different to what someone in a war zone would be experiencing daily. I think the title is particularly aimed at Westerners, as most of us have been handed so much opportunity, yet we often complain and think that we are hardly done by.”

Grand Atlantic: How We Survive, due out June 1

grandatlanticjpg Another Aussie band for your ears on this Friday afternoon/evening, I’m bringing you Grand Atlantic who have their second album coming out June 1.  How We Survive has already leaked a few singles, earning this Brisbane based band some good press and lots of play on college radio and internet radio worldwide. This track, She’s A Dreamer hit the radio this past week, it’s pretty awesome. They’ve got a laid-back, heavy bass, real rock n roll sound. Phil Usher and Morgan Hann provide some excellent guitar licks, appropriately placed in very catchy pop/rock tunes. No, it’s not old-fashioned cock-rock, Grand Atlantic gives you a decidedly post-punk influenced garage sound that fits these American ears just fine, thank you! Their cover of Beyonce’s Single Ladies is not only a great acoustic twist, but just a really nice song, all on it’s own. Enjoy your Friday! xoxox
