The Futureheads, Saturday June 12 @ Lincoln Hall

Struck Dumb mp3 The Futureheads The Chaos …. buy it!
Whooowee!!! Omg this show was Out. Of. Control!!! This might be obvious, but if you see a concert schedule and the last show of the tour is in your home town, GO TO IT! The Futureheads finished up the US leg of their incredibly long tour in support The Chaos, their new record. It was the first time they’d been in the US in four years and they were looking at a few days off before hitting a slew of festivals in the UK. So they just let it loose on the enthusiastic crowd at Lincoln Hall that night.

If you’ve not been to a Futurehead show, let me tell you, these guys are more than energetic. And this show was over the top, crowd participation, bad jokes galore, and wild guitar playing too. Their mixture of punk/pop/super-fast music is uniquely Northern English. I saw a bit of Brakes in this mess, the humor, the fury, the ethos of the chaos of it all. European friends, make sure you get a chance to see this in person. I love the new album, as I’ve said. But having it performed, right in front of you is truly the way it’s meant to be enjoyed, xoxo

Jim Carroll: 8/1/1949 – 9/11/2009 RIP

basketballdiariesFor most of us, Jim Carroll will be remembered as the author of this book. The Basketball Diaries is  Carroll’s autobiography, his own diaries, written as a boy from the ages of 12-16. And unlike most of us who passed through those ages, Carroll actually had something to write about other than the tortured inner dialogue of adolescence. He led this  tri-furcated life, you see. Basketball star/heroin junkie-hustler/poet-literary prodigy tri-furcation is one mighty feat to pull off, no matter what age you are.  His first book of poetry was published at age 17, Organic Trains. The crowd he traveled with in the years to come included Ginsberg, Warhol, Patti Smith, Dylan, Mapplethorpe; all of them, all of the anti-heroes of my own adolescence. For such a busy kid, Jim Carroll still had a whole lot to do in his 20s and 30s.catholicboy

Of course in that environment, of New York City, there was punk rock. It was everywhere, unavoidable, viral in an airborne sense of viral; anyone who was anywhere near the Eastern seaboard (and eventually LA), near any city larger than 50,000 people or within reach of late night a.m. radio waves  listened to and/or performed punk music. And so, Jim Carroll, (the once-basketball star/ heroin junkie/poet-literary star) formed the Jim Carroll Band and gave us Catholic Boy with the great track, ”People Died” in 1980, which seems way too late for such a thing, but looking back it all just happened so damn fast. I mean from 1976 when we were first listening to the Ramones and the Sex Pistols and Siouxie & The Banshees and Blondie and X-Ray Spex, to 1980 when we had the Talking Heads in a big way and so many more post-punk bands the whole thing had transformed and gone through two or three mutations including hardcore and Oi in a matter of 6 – 7 years. So yeah, 1980 was really late and “People Died” sounds very tame for so-called “punk.” I was 16, I remember seeing this on television and thinking it was so very, very, very cool and thinking I just could not wait to get the hell out and to New York City! It wasn’t until I did get out that these people became my anti-heroes. It wasn’t until I got far enough from my own cage to see how far the space was between the bars in theirs by comparison. It took me much longer to become polished enough and even years longer still to get educated enough to appreciate Jim Carroll’s intellect as a literary figure. I do now, but I still hold it against him, in my own way. Forgive me. Mourn his death. Appreciate his genius as he reads “Terrorist Trousers” from Praying Mantisbuy it. Pick up a copy of Catholic Boy here.

Wherein a Tart loses her shit on economics… nothing to see here, move along

noticketmasterSo I popped over to look at upcoming concerts in my city tonight. I saw that Modest Mouse were coming to a rather nice venue near me. They’re a group that I’m intrigued by;  I’d love to see live;  I’d enjoy giving you a review of what it would be like to experience the hype, you know, the whole thing of it all. And there’s a few tracks on their latest record that turn me on quite a bit. I click on the “buy now” button and my heart sank…. it directed me, immediately to TicketBastard. I knew then that I wasn’t going. Now way, no how. But just to quell my evil curiosity, I clicked on through and looked to see how bad it would be if I were. Sure enough, a $29.25 ticket ends up being $45.48 after all the service charges and fees. And that’s after I choose the $0 option of having it mailed to me!

People!!! Come on!!! How can we continue to allow this corporation of money-hungry, soul-raping bastards do this to us? Fuck that, I’m not going. Johnny Depp could invite me to the front of the stage, between sets, and offer himself up naked for a blowjob, and I’d not pay TicketBastard for the privilege of it! (I’d give him cold, hard cash, of course, just in case he’s reading this.) It’s just unbelievable how these venues are connected to these shysters; and musicians either say or know nothing. Darling readers, do you pay like this where you are? I mean for the concerts, not the blowjobs, of course.  But really, TicketBastard should get in the sex business because they’re already exploiting us, don’t you agree? It must be getting late, I’m hyperfocused on that again, oi!

Well, that wasn’t the end of my evening. I’ve been avoiding the current news as much as possible because this healthcare debate just makes me rant at the TV and it upsets the new puppy. If you’ve been reading these pages for any length of time you know what side I’m on. I’ll make it short and sweet. If you’re worried about the US turning into some socialist hegemonic State then I suggest you do a little reading up on what exactly that might mean in light of the following facts:

  • you drive to work on roads funded by Federal tax dollars
  • you expect a Federally tax assisted fire truck to show up if your house goes up in flames
  • you  have contributed all of your working life to the care of our elderly via Medicare and Social Security (which are Federally funded programs)
  • you expect Federal dollars to assist in the education of your children
  • you expect the Federal government to fund your State university’s research toward everything from local agriculture to international economic strategies in order to keep tuition low enough to send your kid to school there
  • you expect the National Guard to show up when there’s a natural disaster to keep people from looting your private property and protect your family from violence when those made homeless become desperate due to lack of food, water, and adequate healthcare. Oh and when volunteers arrive to help give them those things they should be aided by National Disaster Relief funds which are Federally funded and distributed as well.shutupstupid

That has been the status quo for the past 70 or so years of our lives in this country. Adding to that a Federally funded, universal plan to provide adequate health care doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. But you can go ahead and make a huge fuss if you want. You can also go fuck yourself for being a hypocrite.

This vocal minority who are foaming at the mouth about the horrors that will befall us if we  allow everyone access to medical care regardless of employment status actually don’t read much and are ridiculously ill informed on the realities of the healthcare systems of Europe. A friend asked me today what I’d write on walls if I could. I replied, “Read a fucking book and stop sniveling!” The actual problems found in the UK with their NHS (which these critics are so eager to compare us to) are the result of the de-regulation that has occurred since Thatcher began her attempts to dismantle and privatize it.

But the idiocy rises, these are all quotes from the last few days:

“The latest development came on Fox News, a right-wing channel, which discussed whether the acceptance of foreign doctors and nurses into the NHS was a gateway for Muslim terrorists” The Herald If you think this is a sensible argument then NOFX is singing about you. Idiots Are Taking Over (lyrics here)

“US critics have accused the service of putting an “Orwellian” financial cap on the value on human life, of allowing elderly people to die untreated and, in one case, for driving a despairing dental patient to mend his teeth with superglue.” The Guardian Total nonsense, as shown in that article, and by the way, dentistry has been increasingly privatized in the UK since the early 1990s.

“Last week, the most senior Republican on the Senate finance committee, Chuck Grassley, took NHS-baiting to a newly emotive level by claiming that his ailing Democratic colleague, Edward Kennedy, would be left to die untreated from a brain tumour in Britain on the grounds that he would be considered too old to deserve treatment. “I don’t know for sure,” said Grassley. “But I’ve heard several senators say that Ted Kennedy with a brain tumour, being 77 years old as opposed to being 37 years old, if he were in England, would not be treated for his disease, because end of life – when you get to be 77, your life is considered less valuable under those systems.”" The Guardian That’s just crazy-talk, and from an elected official, folks.

Oh, and you might be a little interested in boycotting Whole Foods for a while. Apparently their CEO thinks his plan for fixing our problem of the uninsured masses is better than anything the Democrats have come up with. You can find it here. And please let me know if you think tax reform, tort reform and transparency in patient billing will clear this mess up, ok? Honestly, reforming the tax laws will provide incentive for people to donate money to help insure our indigent population??? The comments over there are kinda fun!

Is there a clear connection between TicketBastard ripping us off and idiots fighting to keep something they don’t understand (that is literally cutting short their lives and the lives of their children)? Perspective, people! But of course, evil Capitalism hopes to distract us from the real issues with these pesky ticket fees and Johnny Depp fantasies. Don’t take the bait, darlings! Get out there and talk to people, read something intelligent, or at the very least post a smart comment somewhere online, xoxojohnny_depp_200902_8_1

Shapes: The Pasture, The Oil, release May 4th

shapes-sleeve

Shapes are: Axe Wielder Steven Bachelor- Guitar, Clef Mittelalter Richard Buckley- Bass, and Stick Smith Gavin Filmer- Drums. They say they’re “Alternative/Rock/Progressive” but this track is all punk to me, and even makes me like a wee bit of screamo for the first time in a long, long while! The instrumentation is really what will grab you, however, in all it’s controlled chaos.

The Pasture, The Oil is being released on 4th May and here is You Butcher which I’m loving!  Shapes are currently touring the fuck outta the UK and Ireland so go see and buy their album so I can have a chance to get my paws on them over here in the States, eh?

Post Honeymoon (opening for World Inferno)

The night  World Inferno Friendship Society hit Chicago was a four band, insane night of music! I missed the first one on the bill, Jewsus but I heard from everyone that they were pretty awesome! Ska/funk/punk goodness was the general description and I dig that, so them being a Chicago band, I’ll have to check it out and get back to you.

posthoneymoon The second one up just happens to be Chicago Twitter friends of mine, Post Honeymoon. It’s a husband/wife duo and even though we’ve been tweeting for what seems like ages, we’d never met. They have this wonderful gothic pop sound that really rocks. Rachel looks like this little sweet thing but don’t be fooled, she may sing sweetly, sadly for a bit but watch out – the kitty has claws! I loved every minute of their short show, Nick bounced back and forth between drums (which he whaled on!) and guitar (searing, piercing and harsh!). Their songs lull you into feeling sorry for them at first but by the end you’re just as pissed off as they are. Post Honeymoon has a sound all their own, they’ve got a tour coming up to support their new LP, Post Honeymoon, coming out June 9 and I’m telling you now; this band is going to GO somewhere soon! Their promo describes them as “think Siouxsie Sioux meets The Motels, meets Love & Rockets (without the guitars).”  Need I add that Rachel’s voice is just gorgeous?

I need to mention Easy Action as well, they’re traveling for a few shows, with World Inferno.  Based in Detroit, they rocked, and I mean, good, old-fashioned, punk scream-fest rock. Nick and I watched them play and we were overjoyed at the intensity of the show. Their drummer was simply amazing, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Lead singer John Brannon was one big, angry dude! You might have caught them at SXSW, I hear they gave a great show.  While not exactly my favorite kind of punk, it was damn good to hear a hard, ear-splitting, cock-rock band rile up the crowd that night.  I need that once in a while, ya know? ;)

Music Blogging, it ain’t just about the music sometimes

Introspection can be a dangerous thing this time of year. Long nights, short days; awful news 24/7 about all the money we don’t have anymore; less than stellar accomplishments in the areas of our lives that are important to us yet we can’t seem to prioritize; if we spend too much time thinking about it all we’ll end up blogging endlessly about Metallica or some such nonsense. Heaven forbid! (you make sure to slap me when this blog gets that bad… you know how I like it by now, good and hard and with the big red paddle ;) )

So, my cure? Get out there and visit other great music blogs and start spreading yourself around. (Why does every phrase that comes out of my fingers seem so dirty lately?!) We’ve been having a great conversation about the phrase “indie” over on Pretty Much Amazing. Ya know, I kinda like that blog! Luis is an awesome guy with some really cool writers under his wings. And, I’ll let you in on a little secret… his blog isn’t just about all those new songs popping up all over the place. Sprinkled throughout are some really thought-provoking posts. It’s kinda like Playboy magazine at PMA. A lot of folks go to look at the T&A (the cool new tracks) and some go for the articles, ha!

Another interesting thread is going on over at Muruch on the Rihanna/Chris Brown mess. I haven’t been following the gossip press on this but I did want to know what Vic had to say about it. Tuning in over there I found a thoughtful post, and equally importantly some really great contributions in the comment section. I’m not pointing you there to highlight what I’ve said, only to emphasize how commenting is part and parcel of what it means to blog! And you should have Muruch on your radar, there’s a completely different level of great music there. I’m constantly amazed at what she finds.

In the process of all that conversing, bloggers build friendships and alliances. We learn that we’re not alone out here in the blogaverse, that most of us often choke up looking at that blank computer screen. And for all, I think, having even one comment of encouragement can really make our day. So yeah, as Sean over at Battery In Your Leg said, I’m a Hack too. And it’s not a pity party but a statement of commiseration/collaberation and of connection across the time and space that we exist in. So thank you dear blogger friends. You keep me going, you need to know that, xoxoxo

You’ve Got A Friend mp3 Me First And The Gimme Gimmes Have Another Ball!….. buy it!

Don’t inadvertently double your anti-depressant dose…

… dire consequences will result. Crying fits? Can’t walk from the kitchen to the couch without spilling your coffee anymore? Not sleepy and even when you do sleep, you wake up every hour just to make sure the clock’s recording the hours still? Yep, those are sure signs you’ve been taking TWO tablets of what you thought were only 150 mg. but in fact were now 300 mg. The kind pharmacist had made it easier for you last week and you only needed ONE tablet.

oh.

I’m sure I’ll be evening out any day now.  If you got a whacked out email from me recently, uh… ooops.  (and yeah, I know calling people who take anti-depressants “crazy” is wrong, but come on, the song titles were too good to pass up, get a sense of humor folks!) xoxo

The crazy girl mix :)

Pillbox mp3 The Cure Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001 … now why don’t I listen to The Cure more often? Someone out there, please remind me once in a while, ok? Yeah, it’s dated, but I still love that crap….. buy it

Crying Jag mp3 Tilt Been Where? Did What? Tilt is one of those punk bands that is simply a joy to listen to. Their song writing range might not have been wide but they boasted good lyrics, and a female vocalist with a cool name (Cinder Block, wow, just wow) and a gorgeous voice. Yeah I’m a sucker for that….  buy it!

Crazy on You mp3 Heart Dreamboat Annie Ok, I know, you kids are thinking “What is up with this MILF and her stupid 70s tunes?” …. I added the MILF part to make myself feel better, it’s all the pills, ya know. But honestly, listen to Anne Wilson’s voice on this song! A classic rock anthem and still fresh, I swear….. buy it.

Crazy In Love mp3 Novi Split Pink In The Sink Yeah, this is just to quench my insane love for cover songs. It’s an outrageous cover of Beyoncé and you should really hear it. It kinda made my day. :) ….. buy it.

Psycho Killer mp3 Talking Heads from the Heatwave Festival, 08/23/80. I found this over on the wonderful Chicago music blog, The Leather Canary.

Grrrrrr…. wherein a Tart gives you a killer mix

fasterpussycat-792078No sense in beating around the bush here. I’ve been feuding with the world lately. The cable company who’s screwed up my channel lineup and can’t seem to figure out the problem is making me hate every person in every call center in every part of the world. The phone company who’s unable to explain why my iphone goes completely black 1 outta 4 times when I remove it from my ear to push in additional numbers (impossible when the electronic keypad won’t appear!) has pushed me over the edge. Even the beautiful weather here in Chicago is pissing me off with its sunny warm days, all I get is a major migraine from the barometric pressure drop. There’s only one place to turn to when you feel as cranky as I do (aside from under the covers): violence.

Homicide Punk You!, Vol 1: Music for the Discerning Slacker by 999 Can you believe 999 is still around? One of the founding bands of Punk, banging it out since 1976, 999 is still touring and had an album out in 2007, “Death in Soho”, visit their site here.

You’re Gonna DieToo Hot To Be This Cool by The W.I.N.K.S.  No, this isn’t the Winks who are from Montreal, it’s another band entirely, which you will instantly see when you hear what these wild women are up to. Unfortunately I fear they have broken up. The only info I could find is here. No MySpace. No website. I’m bummed.

Death 2 Everyone We Are Yatsura by Urusei Yatsuri were an awesome band out of Glasglow named after a Japanese manga (comic), no they’re not Asian, Urusei Yatsuri all Scottish lads and they made a really right on racket. Here’s their site.

Shut Up Still Not Getting Any… by Simple Plan is your typical pop-punk band (read POP-punk)  and hails from Montreal. Yeah, I dig the pop-punk scene in all it’s teenybopper angst. It’s catchy as hell and somehow it fits that kind of mood when you just want to sing along at the top of your lungs. I sing this one to myself when I get in my own way by letting those voices in my head get me down. Simple Plan’s MySpace.

O Bondage, Up Yours! Germ Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex I know I’ve featured this single before but hey, it just doesn’t get better than X-Ray Spex. And no one has a better female voice in punk rock than Poly Styrene. No. One. Ever. Feminist/anti-capitalist anthem of a generation, this song almost gets me out of my want-to-kill mood, … almost.

Broken Bottles Everywhere by Kill Kill Kill And one final selection to bring you down (in a good way). Kill Kill Kill is a band I found just yesterday on Twitter. It’s funny that way. You end up with followers sometimes based on what tweets you send, and after a particularly hectic morning I tweeted about having a song in my head that I couldn’t shake and expressed myself by saying “kill kill kill.” It must have triggered their radar somehow and the rest is history. So chill out to some math noise/rock/pop. And let me know what you think of Kill Kill Kill from LA who gives their music away and takes donations for charity.

Buy links are on the album names, go buy these albums even if the bands don’t exist anymore for the simple fact that they’re good.

Naughty/Noisy Christmas Songs Part 3

christmasnoise

I’ve been challenged! A faithful reader and fellow blogger of much renown, Dirk, of  SexyLoser has challenged me and dearest FiL to see who would post this awesome song first. Alas, dear FiL has handed me the baton! As I’m on holiday, I’ve written this post but scheduled it for later, so here it is.

There’s naughty songs and then there’s the Vandals (covering a Christmas punk classic by the Yobs).  I had been saving this one for an all out punk/loud Christmas post. I knew you would want to just blow out your speakers after Christmas, eh? So here ya go, turn it up and let grandma have it! Again, just don’t tell her you got it from me. xoxoxo

Tart’s top 15 albums for 2008

tartytart

Here’s my year end list… of my faves, and it’s just that dear readers. You’ll find an eclectic mix here, what else should you expect from a musical dilettante? It reflects my love of three major genres; indie/pop, folk, punk/industrial. All of them are on heavy rotation here at chez Tart and please do go out and support these artists! I have many, many bloggers to thank for turning me on to these fine artists, you all know who you are, xoxoxo!

  1. Meursault Pissing on Bonfires/Kissing with Tongues. I reviewed this amazing Indie album recently here, find two tracks to listen to and support this great band put out by Song by Toad records.
  2. The Duke Spirit Neptune. A review of their gig is here but this album has proved to be worthy of play after play. Hard hitting indie rock, with lead singer Leila Moss’ beautiful throaty vocals, and a great band, I can’t say enough about this group. This Ship Was Built To Last mp3 Buy it here.
  3. Ayria Hearts For Bullets. Reviewed here with mp3.
  4. Trapt Only Through The Pain. Mainstream industrial/alternative rock, anticipated hereCuriosity Kills mp3 What can I say? When you love a certain sound you don’t need a reason why. I’m hooked on Trapt. Buy it here.
  5. Samantha Crain The Confiscation EP . I saw her live after falling for her folk-inspired voice on this EP, she’s even better than I hoped. Completley amazing and coming out with a new album in 2009 – someone to watch for, people! Unique and beautiful, you must listen to this. The River mp3 Buy it here.
  6. Arizona Glowing Bird. Reviewed here with mp3 to listen to as well. All indie, sound of an angel, organically flowing creative band that scratches that itch you never knew you even had.  Buy it here.
  7. Sigur Ros Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. This should be on everyone’s list, completely unique and there’s no reason at all why I should like this but I absolutely do adore it very much! Góðan daginn mp3 I usually describe this kind of music as “movie music” but with an indie twist.
  8. Frightened Rabbit The Midnight Organ Fight. Old Old Fashioned mp3 This album has been on constant rotation, I mean constant. It’s so Scottish, so danceable, so alternative/indie and the sound is just so right for 2008. Buy it here.
  9. The Loved Ones Build and Burn. This is another anticipated album for me. I loved the Loved Ones raw melodic punk sound. They reminded me of old skool punk, back when punk bands didn’t sing so damn fast and in that awful growly way that you couldn’t understand the words, remember? These kids whine about love and being broke and life in the general punk way that we all felt when we were young. I really love this album and just couldn’t keep it off my top ten even if it’s not the greatest punk music of all time. I Swear mp3 Buy it here.
  10. Lightspeed Champion Falling Off The Lavender Bridge. This guy’s voice just KILLS me… it’s unique, it’s full of locality, his songs are angsty, humours, gutsy and instantaneously recongnizable. Listen to Lightspeed Champion’s indie/freak/folk style and you’ll agree with me, I swear. Let The Bitches Die mp3 Buy it here.
  11. Robin Grey I Love Leonard Cohen EP. I’m way behind in my review of this EP of a wonderful folk singer who I found on a blog nearby. He’s a Leonard Cohen fan, has a beautiful voice, and well… check back soon for more of why I love this record! I Love Leonard Cohen mp3 and you can download the EP on Jamendo … maybe give Mr. Grey a donation there too, eh?
  12. The Poison Arrows Casual Wave EP. Reviewed their gig here, as they opened for Holy Fuck. I’ve listened to this moody, dark EP quite a lot since then and they surely deserve more air space and a major signing in 2009. Here’s hoping! Frozen Human Satellite mp3 buy it here.
  13. The Midway State Holes. Recently reviewed this band here. I still can’t get these songs out of my head. Definitely, this is a band to watch, mp3 on that review for ya.
  14. Rolo Tomassi Hysterics. This album is so interesting. I keep listening to it because I can’t catergorize it. It’s punk/experimental/synth/just plain mental. And the fact that it’s a woman doing all that screetching is even more intriguing and amazing. It’s also near impossible to pick one track off it to give you, the whole album should be listened to through, as a whole. But try this Oh Hello Ghost mp3, and go buy it here.
  15. Jesus on Extasy Beloved Enemy. I never got around to reviewing this album, but although it’s not as great as their last, I still love it.Lies mp3.  Industrial/dance music doesn’t get much better than this, buy it here.
