Good Morning mp3 Kid Canaveral, Shouting At Wildlife …. buy it!
Twitter has landed me a lot of friends, far and wide, and some of them are even talented bastards! One day as I was horsing around with my friend Jim of the wonderful Scottish blog, Aye Tunes, I found myself chatting up this Kid Canaveral. I still have no idea who’s behind the tweeting for the band. We got on rather well, … they probably drunkenly, me most flirtatiously. Mention was made of an album in the making, said album was eventually sent round my way and you know the rest of the story here,…. all together now, I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO IT EVER SINCE!
You read the same things on these here album reviews for a reason, ya know. I do really listen to the ones I like more than a few times.
So this Kid Canaveral band are four people from Scotland, two guys and two girls and they make music that has a smidgen enough of the zaniness we love about Britpop, a whole bunch of really great lyrics and generally just amazingly catchy hooks. I don’t know if other blogs in this country cover much music from the UK. If not, it’s a shame, for there’s so much coming out of Scotland, especially, that I find to be such a relief from all this samey sameness of Passion Pit, Of Montreal, etc.
Starting with “Good Morning,” (of course, and brace yourself for the bouncy Scottish-ness of it all) this record jumps the starting gate with a song that I can’t help but imagine soundtracking the opening credits to a really great summer blockbuster film. Its guitar riff is searing but covered by keyboards and a pummeling drumbeat but that’s not what you’ll remember about this killer of a song. The chorus, “do you know something that I don’t know” just bores itself into your brain and you love how it does it. See, that’s the thing about Kid Canaveral. They’re like the younger brother you never had who annoys the fuck out of you sometimes but when you turn to smack them they give you that look that melts your heart and you just love them instead. Now, I’m not saying their music is annoying in any way. It’s surely not. But sung by anyone else, played by any other band, these songs just might be. The charm that Kid Canaveral holds in their little pinky finger is more than most bands could hope for. And this band has charmed the knickers right off me.
“Only Went Out To Get Drunk Last Night” is equally captivating, an anthem to Scotland’s forte if you will. “Cursing Your Apples” has such a wonderful Futureheads feel to it, I’d love to hear this live! The post-punk aesthetic to Kid Canaveral reigns against a backdrop of just quality songwriting and that is what I think brings so much fun to this music. It moves, it bops, it never stops dancing. And yet the variety of sounds this young band bring to the record, as seen in songs like “Smash Hits” are just further proof that an Elvis Costello-good hook goes a long way. But for me, the song that defines Shouting at Wildlife has to be “And Another Time.” I do hope you go buy this album, there’s twelve tracks and they’re all good. This band is going places and it won’t be long before you won’t be the only one over here in the U.S. to know their name, xoxo
