This, my dear readers, is something else. It’s a big, hot, mess of psychedelica, hiphop, and funk that I cannot wait to see happen live. We lucky folks here in Chicago will witness this Sunday night, June 13 at the Empty Bottle. They’ll be fresh from Bonnaroo and pumped up for Lollapalooza so I think we’ll get a pretty damn good show! Listening to some of what’s on their MySpace gives me a feel not unlike what I remember feeling for the wonderful industrial group of the 80s, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, along with maybe a bit of Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer. There’s a lot of energy in this, a lot of paying respect to their heroes. Give “Step Right Up” a listen, yeah, that’s all about Tom Waits, no doubt about it. If you love those weird and wacky combinations of things like I do, this is the band for you. Elijah Jones (lead singer) seems capable of doing just about anything and the sounds on this range from heavy percussion to keyboard-driven jazzy pop. I’ve not heard a track that I dislike. And I’ve also not heard one that sounded like the other! Wow! Spin magazine has declared them a “must hear band” at SXSW, I don’t doubt that at all.

I watched the video. Went to the Beacon Theater on Easter night in a pouring rain storm. Got to the venue and there are firemen everywhere. When I get to my seat at the top of the balcony a good portion of the roof has fallen in from the rain. Firemen send everyone out a side door, down the fire escape, around the block and back in the door.
They tell us just to go and stand anywhere we want so we find a spot on the floor against the back wall and are treated by Warren Haynes to a 3 hour monster show where he played Prince, Van Morrison, Black Sabbath in the mix with all his great tunes. Totally blown away by the train ride home. Don’t know if it was the little corner we found that made the difference, but it sure was sweet.
I swear, Andrew… you never fail to surprise me, even when I KNOW you’re full of surprises!!! Excellent story. All forgiven xoxo
