2nd Annual Paul Haig Day!

Relieve mp3 Relive Paul Haig …. buy it!

Paul Haig, former singer of Josef K, and current songwriter/singer of wonderful music all his own, has been a blogger’s best friend. Last year when Blogger (the company) and google went berserk and began deleting people’s posts and making a general bully of themselves, Paul got involved. He got involved because the dear Vinyl Villain posted a track of his around this time and it was snatched down, supposedly due to copyright infringement. When Paul, the artist and sole copyright owner, heard about this unauthorized takedown he became “bemused” and offered up some more mp3s as a way of encouraging us (legitimate, not-full-album-download-musician-raping) bloggers in what we do. And what we do has always been clear to this artist – we promote music, we give free advertising so that our readers will go out and give their hard earned cash to support musicians in order to make more music. It’s really quite simple. Paul wasn’t confused. We weren’t confused. Blogger and google are the only ones confused and honestly, it’s not even really them, it’s the bureaucracy of laws and the capitalist interest that those laws protect that thrives on making confusion. Unfortunately, the confusion leads to money being handed over to people who haven’t earned it and taken from people who have.

So this wonderful artist, Paul Haig, has given us many gifts. He’s encouraged us not only with his music but also with his attitude toward it and toward our work. His latest album, Relive, is reviewed here by BBC music, along with audio clips of each track. It’s a techno, dark, wondrous mix of guitars, drums and electronica. This is some fine post-punk, post-modern pop. Pick up a copy and give back some of the support he’s given us, oxo

ooooh wait!!! There’s more!!
Trip Out The Rider (remix) mp3

(I stole this from JC’s blog) “It’s a great version of the opening track from Paul’s most recent LP Relive, released to great critical acclaim at the tail end of last year. This particular remix is one that has been done by Paul for today.

However, I’m delighted to reveal – and this is a world-wide exclusive – that a further remix has been done by Fred Deakin from Lemon Jelly, the highly innovative UK electronic act, and it will be made available as a very exclusive 7″ vinyl single later this year.”

Wanna know what the new Maps & Atlases record sounds like? Coming on Barsuk Records June 29!

Chicago, I guess we can’t cry foul when our very own Maps & Atlases leave us to travel the country promoting their first LP on a major indie label, now can we? It’s not like they’ve ever stayed put for very long! This band has been on the road for ages and it has paid off. If you’ve ever heard them play you know that their intricate sound, layered as it is with fingers that fly over guitar strings and sticks that seem to be in continual motion on drums, seems to be incomprehensibly effortless. If you’ve ever heard a new band, just finding its way with its sound, you know how pained that effort really is. Maps & Atlases are pros to the max and I’ve not even said a word about Dave’s vocals yet.

I used to think I didn’t like “art rock” or even “indie” music. It wasn’t the steady rhythms of rock and roll that I was used to hearing on the radio. When I started blogging, almost two years ago, I stumbled across bands like the Foals (with their very British pop sound) and some heavier music from The Dillinger Escape Plan and Daughters (whose new album is excellent, by the way!). When I got to Maps & Atlases’ two EPs I really found my comfort zone in indie and from there I could go back through and learn to love some of the rest. This new album promises to be, well… promising! It’s always a huge step when a band moves to being able to work with a top-notch producer with amazing resources at hand. I’m not sure what to make of Dave’s quote, “We went into the record with the understanding that the creation of the album would be separate from its existence as a live piece of music, which was really liberating.” But I think it’s going to pan out as something really beautifully, unique. Pretty much everything this band does is like that. xoxo

The Kickback gives Great Self Love, need I say more?

Indigenous Newpapermen circa 1980.mp3 The Kickback, Great Self Love …. buy it! (that’s an itunes link, dearies)

This EP made it into my inbox recently and it’s been kicking shit outta there ever since! Sorry other mp3s, The Kickback is making room for itself and it’s not taking prisioners! This band grabbed me right from the start. Their EP, Great Self Love, is a sweet little collection of four songs that evoke a bit of that Scottish sound (Glasvegas, We Were Promised Jetpacks, etc.) and map it right onto a solid Midwestern base. What you end up with is strong songwriting that showcases Billy Yost’s rich vocals and well-placed lyrics. It doesn’t hurt that The Kickback’s backup vocals punctuate perfectly,  melodies that stick in your head for days. These songs don’t exactly have a hook. They’re full of hooks, one right after the other, not in a cheesy way but in four tracks, this band has filled my brain with ten or so pleasantly, memorable refrains.

I think you’ll find “Indigenous Newspaper Men circa 1980″ is one to sing along to, as well as a great start to an EP.  It’s been on repeat for the past few days here. “Rough City” has a melancholy feel to it that I’m guessing is going to be chilling in a live context. It’s also a good example of some thrifty songwriting, a little goes a long way here.  A noticeable change in pace hits you a bit hard on “Counselor” and I like it that way. This one has a nice twist to it and might be the catchiest of the bunch. And then they take you home with a six minute track, “Burner (Things I Know Nothing About).” They ease you into it, and then The Kickback give you a nice noisy finish, sprinkled with some reverb. Great Self Love is the handjob you saved up for, trust me. You can catch them tonight at the Empty Bottle, xoxo

(Yeah, I’ll catch you up on all these shows eventually, I’m out every night this week it seems! Geeze! Tonight, I’m just in from a killer show. Apteka was simply gorgeous, as I knew they’d be. The new song, “Aragon” was fucking rocking! Next up, the Depreciation Guild simply brought it and woo’d the crowd as they do. Their new album translated so very well and the places where they plumped up tracks with some additional guitar bits were divine! It’s always good to see them. I listened to much of Serena Maneesh, I know Baby Stew will tell you more about it. He was enthralled!!!)
