The Annuals show us their Sweet Sister and tour with The Most Serene Republic

Loxtep mp3 The Annuals Sweet Sister …. buy it

Finally this band is coming my way! I’ve got this EP on constant rotation here at Chez Tart, no lie. And this song is definitely going to end up on my list of favorites of 2010. I cannot get it out of my head, and I don’t mind that at all. The Annuals came across my radar last year with their single “Confessor” from Such Fun. It whet my appetite for more. And more is what I got with this blank CDr in the mail from their PR folk. I was wow’d. Sweet Sister continues with their characteristic easy but driving beat, you know the kind that rocks you into a really nice groove. The percussion is goes all Caribbean on ya on some tracks, on others it’s pure nu-folkish, and there’s quite a bit of harmonization going on. It’s a sextet after all; they make a bit of noise! Then there’s lyrics. For a band of young people, (and no, I’ll not dwell on this, but these musicians are not very old), they write some very good, meaningful lyrics. It’s about love, it’s about life, all the cliches but not cliched at all. These songs are so fucking happy making, I can’t be in a bad mood by the end of this EP. It’s disgustingly good. xoxo

The Locals: Salt ... a sweet little EP from a kick-ass local band

The Locals never cease to thrill me. I mean really, how many bands do you know like this? They manage to walk the fine line between girl rock and raw, hyper-fueled, power pop and they do it with such finesse. This new EP, Salt, (itunes link) has four tracks and I love each of them. A step up from their most recent album, The Big Picture, The Locals give us sleeker, more filled out, just beautifully produced music. Salt packs a different kind of punch; it sighs in your ear as it slides its hand in your back pocket. The drums are fast, Kirk squeezes a lot in in a short amount of time. Melodies are well-crafted but what is most striking is Yvonne’s vocals, to be honest. Pushed way up front in the mix, her throaty delivery, as it slides up to those high notes is just beautiful. And then on “Amnesia” she shows her whole range from low, gutsy notes to an intimate, soft bit, to a true rock and roll howl. Christy’s harmonies just add the right amount of edge to what is already got you perked up and listening carefully. The Locals are a all that and a bag of chips. This EP more than proves their versatility and potential. Go see them, add these songs to your playlist now, xoxo

Love of Everything hits you with severely infectious sincerity and a few tennis balls too... with Best In Tensions

I Love All You Guys mp3 Love of Everything Best In Tension …. buy it
Fear of Missing Out mp3

I really don’t want to spoil Bobby and Elise by posting this the same day they gave it to me, but I can’t keep this video under wraps because it’s just too good to keep from you, darling readers! You know how I often tell you to just click the video on and then go to another page and just listen to the song? DON’T DO THAT NOW. You have to see this one, ok? Love of Everything is a duo out of Chicago that’s played with bands like No Age, Dutchess and the Duke, Chain and the Gang, Kurt Vile and These Are Powers. Bobby, of Joan of Arc, and his wife Elise are lo-fi, fuzzed out guitar playing, minimal drumming musicians,… almost what I’d call “post-indie” rockers. Their music is ironic without trying that hard, ya know? The melodies are catchy, the songs are pretty short but most of all the sensibility behind it all is severely infectious sincerity. That’s as close as what I can get to putting into words what Love of Everything is because the name of the band pretty much says it all. Their new album, Best In Tensions is out on Bobby’s own label, Record Label and Polyvinyl Records, buy it there. xoxo

Monday (ok, Tuesday) Melange... more music goodies for you

Do these music melanges give you whiplash? I guess they’re a mix of everything I like and my taste runs pretty wide. Sorry if it seems all over the place!

Bombadil is a favorite band of mine, their album Tarpits and Canyonlands was on my list of best ofs for 2009 and I still listen to it often. Here’s a brand new video of Scott Avett of the Avett Bros doing a song from that album, “Marriage.” …. buy Bombadil’s album here

The Mary Onettes have missed their stop here in Chicago, sadly, due to that damn volcano! But, I didn’t want you to miss out on their music. This single is a Record Store Day exclusive and will be released on May 5. You can catch it here, early! As it’s described by their manager, “a bit like a descendant of The Go Betweens and The Stone Roses high on Swedish mountains mixed with A-ha in a gothic church.” Got your interest? Good!

The Night Before The Funeral mp3 The Mary Onettes,…. check for that 7″ single, here

The Pallers produce this dark, self-proclaimed lazy electronica that I find completely refreshing. They’re from Sweden, of course, and they made this record in Spain. The opposing forces thrill me, ok?

The Kiss mp3 The Pallers, …. from their upcoming release due May 26. Their first EP, Humdrum can be purchased here

Lloyd’s Garage gives us Oh Lovely mp3, a tragic tale, a rockin tune. Buy their debut EP, From The Comfort of Your Home directly from the artist here.

And for you folk lovers, Adelaide’s Cape, a.k.a. Sam Taylor is touring and has a lovely single he’s giving away. If I was anywhere nearby I’d go hear him, this is just beautiful, nu-folk music. The echo in it is really charming and more than a little haunting too. What could be a really simple little song is made so much more by such a simple effect, I love that.

Belle mp3 it’s not on his debut Ep, Last Sleep in Albion …. but buy it anyway

Jarrod Gorbel @ Schubas, April 24 ... new record coming in September, Devil's Made A New Friend

Jarrod Gorbel was a true delight to hear last night. I could tell you all about the many songs he sang, how his voice was amazing, and heartfelt, and full of the kind of poignancy that made you forget you were standing in a crowd, watching him and made you probably make that face you make when you listen to something beautiful at home all alone. I could go on about how charming he was, the funny things he said, the way he interacted with the crowd, the stories he told while he tuned his guitar. I could even tell you how my girl was so enthralled by him that she threatened promised to leave me for him the next time he came to Chicago. But what I think you need to know about Jarrod Gorbel is that for about an hour last night he made a roomful of people sing and sway and crowd up front, next to the stage, and wait in line to meet him after the show. Because what Jarrod Gorbel does is create a sense of commonality between all of us. His songs sum up what we all experience in relationships. His on-stage banter reveals how his life is filled with the inconveniences and disappointments we all share, as well as our common prospects for what great thing might soon happen next. Nothing seems too lofty nor too low for Jarrod Gorbel. And with the obvious talent he holds, pulling that trick out of his hat is magic, indeed.

Go see him perform if you can. His new LP, Devil’s Made A New Friend, is due out in September. He told me it is truly finished and just awaiting album art and distribution. I’ll let you know when I get to hear it. I anticipate it being wonderfully like what we know of him thus far. The songs he played last night from it were sharp, and bright, and fresh. I look forward to them, I know you will too. In the meantime, this little EP, Ten Years Older, is really sweet. With four tracks, it contains some beautifully crafted songs with nice, mellow instrumentation to back his vocals. Click the EP cover art above to purchase directly from him. xoxo.

Make sure you stop over at Daytrotter to download their session with him, it’s fantastic!! (and free)

My Pet Dragon: Lover In Hiding ........... this duo can't hide much longer!

Lover In Hiding mp3 Lover In Hiding My Pet Dragon … buy it
My Pet Dragon comes to us from Brooklyn by way of Upstate NY and Mumbai. This duo has melded modern indie pop music and Indian influences into an oh so smooth sound. Their maxi single Lover In Hiding features six tracks, four versions of “Lover In Hiding” and two other great songs, “Between Us” and “New Nation.” I can’t help but think of 80s dance tunes when I hear “Between Us,” not the cheesy ones, the good stuff that has stood the test of time. And then, effortlessly, Todd Michaelsen switches gears with “New Nation” and takes us on a folk song journey, equally beautiful as all the other tracks. My Pet Dragon has that quality; good songwriting, solid melodies and the right balance of repetition and soaring notes that I wager will also remain fresh years from now. Watch for this, catch it now, xoxo

White Rabbits and Here We Go Magic come to Metro on Sunday 4/25

The Salesman (Tramp Life) mp3 (Daytrotter Session) Percussion Gun …. buy it! and do go over and check out that Daytrotter session, you can download lots more from them for free!

Collector mp3 Pigeons Here We Go Magic  ….. due June 8

Two great bands are coming to town this Sunday and for once I’ve got a post going in advance to let you know about it. Oh yes, this tart has her shit together, ever so briefly! White Rabbits put out Percussion Gun last May to the relief of many critics who had already told us just how fucking great this would be. Yes, yes it was. Yes, it has a bite and a smooth hand across the cheek afterward too. There’s a raw masculine edge to Steve Patterson’s vocals that plays nicely with the heavy percussion on many of the tracks. Harmonies are sparse and well placed. And the guitars, well… this is pure head-nodding goodness. Long, hard, down-beats with strong bass notes are always accompanied by jangly guitar riffs, except when they’re not. And those moments are punctuated with such creative flurries of keyboards (“Lionesse”), tambourine (“The Lady Vanishes”), or vocals simply pared down to the point of exquisite, agonizing simplicity which builds to a thundering climax, as in “The Salesman (Tramp Life)” my favorite track of all. Can you tell, I love this album? I can’t wait to see this live.

Here We Go Magic is new to me. It’s a five-piece band, their debut was released in 2009, self-titled.  Pigeons is coming out on June 8, look for it!  Their single, “Collector” is a fast-paced little number. The vocals are a little chirpy but in a really nice way. I think it’s a nice compliment to what we here in Chicago know from Skybox (what I can tell from this one song, mind you) and maybe a bit like Freelance Whales? I hate comparing bands, but based on only one song, I’m not left with much options. If you’ve got experience with Here We Go Magic, let me know in the comments what you think. I look forward to finding out more and seeing how they pair up with White Rabbits!

Have you ever seen handbells at a rock concert? Seriously, I go to about 325 shows a year and I’ve NEVER seen a band haul out a table of handbells and sing a cappella. OK Go did it for “What To Do.” It was beautiful. OK Go were wonderful and the music was as well. I’m sure you’ve seen the videos, the personalities of these five guys shine out from them and it shone from the stage of Metro last night too. Damian chatted effortlessly throughout the almost two hour set as stage techs prepped and handed them guitar after guitar. I counted at least 14 of them hung on a giant rack toward the back of the stage, from my place on the rail, in the balcony.

OK Go has been promoting this album for what seems like forever now. Finally they can proudly sell it on their own label and that was not lost on the audience last night. We all applauded loudly when he announced the re-release of “Of The Blue Colour of The Sky” on their very own Paracadute Records! (even if it is perhaps the most awkward album title to say or remember.) Say what you will about their stage show, yes… there are four or five instances of confetti canons coating the crowd in layers of colorful shreds… yes, the videos stream endlessly behind the band, in giant post-modern, irony… yes, teensy cameras attached to their mic stands capture extreme closeups of each band member (save Dan, the drummer) which is then projected on that giant screen… yes, Damian prances and perhaps overemphasizes his intention to honor his fans wishes by wading into the crowd numerous times, including once armed with an acoustic guitar and a perch of some sort with which he sits and serenades the main-floor crowd, changing positions half-way through so all can be faced… say ALL this, these guys are amazing musicians! I know I’m used to understatement and lo-fi and lo-key meekness. But I also know a thing or two after seeing so many shows. That part in “All Is Not Lost” that I always thought was keyboards is some serious guitar. Those bass lines are funky, and real, and hard. Songs off this new album are pop gold and played up as such! The crowd at Metro last night ate it up. Coming home to this stage where OK Go had played so often, opening for OMD (we were told), and many other bands, was a dream come true, and the band played a very special set. Their cover of the Pixies “Wave of Mutilation” was particularly inspired, and had us “old folks” rockin in our seats. From playing the Double Door last April, to playing a sold out Metro this year, OK Go have made this business their own!

Earl Greyhound – Shotgun from think/feel on Vimeo.

Opening for Ok Go was the fabulous band, Earl Greyhound. I had heard this of band a few weeks before and had featured them here on these pages. Before they came on stage I was already jumping around in my seat in anticipation. I listened to the album and I knew the live show would be amazing! The stage techs began bringing out drums, shiny, sparkly blue drums…. lots of drums. It was surely more than a whole kit there. And the bass drum, wow! I saw Ricc come out and take a seat after they were all set up and he moved them even a bit further apart, that bass drum is 34″ (I asked their tour manager)! Needless to say, he’s incredible. As I told him after the show, it’s so cool to see someone find something they do so well and then watch them do it so well. Playing together since 2002, this trio from Brooklyn simply knocked the crowd OUT! When “Eyes of Cassandra” hit them, I don’t think anyone there knew what to do with it, leaving aside Kamara’s friends and family who were in the audience. Matt began his guitar solo, wreaking havoc with it, and with the vocals ringing in their ears, the crowd went crazy with applause. Photographers rushed to Kamara’s side of the stage to capture her amazing bass playing and rock-star poses. This woman exudes static electricity, sliding her hand up and down the neck of her bass and singing wildly into the mic. She is a beauty to watch, and captivating to hear. The three of them, as different as their styles are (Ricc with his incredible strength and roll after roll, a mix of soul and prog rock magic; Matt’s reigned in 70s guitarwork and resonating vocals that meld current indie sounds with the best of all that it’s based on; and Kamara’s gifted range on both instrument and voice, her command of the bass shows this instrument for what it is – not just additional percussion but a tool for gorgeous harmonies as well) merge into a trio that is inseparable. I cannot imagine any of them playing with anyone else. I don’t need to go on about Earl Greyhound. You will soon see their name everywhere and hear them too. Talent at this level is inescapable. xoxo

Yoko Ono's Give Me Something hits hard on the dance charts

Give Me Something (Junior Boys Remix) mp3 Yoko Ono Give Me Something (click on that album title to buy it in itunes, darlings)

A hero of mine for over 30 years now, Yoko Ono is still topping the charts, now with dance tunes (!) under an indie label! This remix by Junior Boys features a song from the Double Fantasy album that she and John released in 1980. Hear it, and listen to the original below; let me know what you think. This was a post-punk, avant garde jab back in the day. It’s been turned into a nice, funky, synthed up and danceable number now. I like it. There’s in fact, a whole bunch of these remixes out. You can find them over on Yoko’s MySpace page and I suggest you do. She’s joined forces with producers and collaborators such as The Flaming Lips, Pet Shop Boys, Basement Jaxx, Danny Tenaglia, Spiritualized, CSS, Felix Da Housecat, Antony and the Johnsons and Peaches, to name a few. Twisted Records has put out a whole series of these under the name ONO, check them out here!
