The Middle East are coming to the US along with Mumford & Sons, well… they’re already here, but those of us who aren’t at SXSW wouldn’t know that just yet, now would we. Yes, I’m fighting the urge to sound bitter. I’m glad to be here in Chicago and away from the drunken, unruly masses down there hurling themselves willy nilly at rockstars and wankers who are all smashed together into all-too-small roomfuls filled with a mass of sweaty, smelly indie music lovers. Truly, I am glad. Honest, I am. I mean, we all know how much I hate roomfuls of sweaty, excited, young men, right? Sigh….
Back to the music… come May 24 The Middle East and Mumford & Sons will grace the ever so lovely stage of Lincoln Hall and give us what promises to be a beautiful evening. I am gagging for it. I know you are too. What could be better than having the gorgeous boy/girl harmonies of The Middle East wavering in and out between the fine finger-plucked guitar sounds of their music right up next to what can only be described as the nostalgic frenzy wrought by the Mumford boys? My head swims at the thought of this combination. And the acoustics at Lincoln Hall are exquisitely perfect to capture the breathy vocals and hushed nuances in this folksy mess. I’ve been listening to more raucous, noise, experimental stuff lately. I’ve been worried that I’d grown old and stodgy with all this folk music, all this sweet, butterfly kisses and chocolate syrup type of sugary stuff. But coming back to these two songs just now… oh fuck it all. I love the both. Let me have it all. I wait just as eagerly for the bass to hit in “Blood” as I do in any weird, obscure, difficult-to-listen-to piece of musical oddity. They elicit the same curiosity in me. The big difference, of course, is that the crowd at this show, at Lincoln Hall will be full of the prettier people, heheheh xoxo
(if that Mumford & Sons vid doesn’t come through hang on, I’m working on getting it for ya, darlins… or go here. It’s a sweet little 12 min. tour documentary)

PERLEASE say hello from me when you see them. I want to freak them out.
hahah will do! you know I love this little game
Just saw the Middle East at the SXSW Paste Magazine Party. They sounded pretty good, but they had only 40 minutes to play and 20 of those were taken up by the logistics of getting all the mics set up for so many band members. Frustratingly short gig. I’ve got tix to see Mumford & Sons in DC on May 20, though, so I’ll guess I’ll have a chance to get a more thorough impression then.
