My Gold Mask brings you A Thousand Voices… all of them are beautiful

Circle Mass mp3 My Gold Mask A Thousand Voices EP  ….. buy it

mygoldmaskA Thousand Voices hits Chicago Saturday night at the Hideout and you bet your ass I’ll be there. Gretta and Jack, My Gold Mask, are completely blowing up. I mean, they are absolutely rising to the top and not just here in our fair city, but across the country. Their new EP, A Thousand Voices, really showcases the progress they’ve made both in songwriting and in just plain musical form. These five songs are mixed beautifully, sound gorgeous, and are lyrically interesting. Guitar tones echo Gretta’s vocals; percussion breaks up and backs solid guitar riffs; tambourine  and cowbell cranks up the energy even more.

You’ve already heard “Violet Eyes” on this blog and many, many others around the country and in the UK. My Gold Mask played a fantastic party at CMJ for Sheena Beaston and The Culture of Me and now they’ve finished their EP and are ready to smack the world in the face, full on with their eclectic sound of post-punk, gypsy, nouveau rock. These two people create more sound and more beauty than most five-piece bands out there right now. They are an excellent example of what we bloggers are always saying about how talent and energy are everything. Just listen to “Circle Mass,” a song I’ve heard at all their live shows. This version just comes together in a way that I didn’t imagine before, simply by adding a few sounds and some layers of vocals and guitar. I love it! When you hear them live you get the force of the dedication they put into their music, and the charisma of this duo, not to mention the sheer awesomeness of their songs. But in the recordings, what jumps out is just how much talent is there to work with, and what tiny little effects have magnified in their songs. Wow!

I obviously can’t say enough good things about My Gold Mask. If you’re in town, do yourself a favor and come see them (buy tix here). If not, pick up this EP and treat your ears to what is a unique and musically interesting wonder. Since I first discovered this duo back in March, I’ve kept them in my pocket like a shiny pebble, drawing them out again and again to gaze at and marvel. Their music never ceases to please me, their charm as people and musicians never fails to amaze me, and I’m so proud to be able to call them my friends and my hometown band. xoxo

I like what this band has added to the mix when the recorded. Probably makes the live show sound a little different from the album. They seem like the live show is pretty raw. waiting to hear how it goes.

    • Yeah, the live show is awesome… and well, maybe not “raw” as much as sexy. I mean, alive! So the added sophistication that is added in the studio only increases that effect. It’s all good. xo
