(I’ve not been given permission to post any mp3s but you can find two from this debut and unreleased album over on Stereogum, I guess they have exclusive rights or something like that you know the Tart tries not to promote leaks on this here blog
)
I’ve just popped Freelance Whale’s new record, Weathervanes, into my ears and dear readers, it’s good. It’s very good. (click that album title to pre-order it, due out March 16th)
Yes, this is going to be a beautiful show. Yes you want to be here. Yes we people of Chicago are lucky, very lucky people. Their 2010 US tour gets it’s first public stop right here in Chi-town. (yeah they’re playing a student-only show so we get to claim being first!)
This record is all tingly and light, with sweet tenor voices and glockenspiel tuned way up high. It’s folk-rooted and yet wispy and ethereal. At times it swims a bit lower, into some electronic beebopping landscapes, only to sail again skyward with those ever-present, sweet vocals. I’m finding it incredibly impossible to retain this scowl on my face by the third or fourth song. Damnit!
I thought that perhaps I’d grow weary of it all, the sweetness, the happy tone in which these catchy lyrics are delivered, the glockenspiel, oh the glockenspiel! But no, it’s good, dear readers. It’s very good. Come see for yourself. Don’t be late, don’t miss the opening band on the 14th. xoxo
