Robot Science: Doodads … you know January needs some beeps and bops to get us out of this slump we’re in!

The thing I hear from every single lo-fi, digital musician is that their music might be termed “chiptunes” but it doesn’t sound like traditional chiptunes music. Now, I’ve gotten to the point where I can’t even remember what traditional chiptune music sounded like! What’s tradition anymore? The new chiptune tradition is surely being carved out by groups like Robot Science, who have released this new album Doodads last November.  I turned it on today and let me tell you, it’s fulfilling two of my New Year’s resolutions: I vowed to listen to more instrumental music because it’s something I really enjoy but never make a concerted effort to do; I just stumble upon it and find myself loving it… and, I eased into writing up this post the same day I received the email about it; keeping up with my inbox better this year!

Listening to Doodads, I lost myself in it, and I found I wanted to tell you all sorts of things about how it allowed me to think about my day, about people, and things, and movies I’d seen, and other music I’d heard. This stuff just opened my brain, is that odd? There are just some kinds of music that do that. There’s space in it for thinking. Instrumental music especially, without imposed ideas via lyrics, causes my mind to wander even further afield than most other types of music.  I compared it to the kind of chiptunes that the Depreciation Guild does and wondered about the hardware involved. I envisioned movie scenes for these tracks. I wondered about that album art and thought of the last time I had stood and stared at the jellyfish display at the aquarium. In other words: I relaxed. Ahhh, I needed that.

Dearest readers, I’m in a slump. The holidays were good. I don’t feel particularly down or depressed. Life is good, honest. I’ve got that constant dread of the “major project” hanging over my head that never gets done and which I cannot talk about here, so don’t ask. But otherwise, yeah… life is awesome, more awesome than ever even. My life is fucking great, and the fucking has been fucking great. But, the blogging… I’ve lost some mojo here. Hopefully by saying it aloud I can break its spell. I’ve just been uninspired. New music has come in, it’s been good, I’ve listened with open ears and enjoyed a lot of it. Writing about it… seems hard. I’ve also been uninspired to go out to a show. I dragged myself out to see Jogger, and I’m glad I did. But wow, it was hard to do. So, there we are. Let’s fix this, eh!?! Out in the open. Air the dirty laundry. Now go away, bad stuff! We’re gonna move forward even if we have to push this train ourselves. I love this blog, and it’s so rewarding to promote new music here. So, if you’ve not seen much lately, don’t fret. I’m not giving up. I’m not apologizing either, it just is what it is. I’m hangin in here.

But, back to the music! This album is FREE! You can download the whole dang thing. And you should. Even though robot science is giving the music away, consider donating some money. Amazing amounts of time and talent go into producing an album and musicians and artists should be supported, eh? I really loved the latter half of  Doodads, o if you’re not particularly turned on by that first song, scroll down. And, you’ll notice that this is robot science’s second album. The first one, Square, is also on their bandcamp.com site and you can stream it there too. It’s equally gorgeous. Give it a spin and come back and check up on me, eh? xoxo

  • Hang in there, Tarty One. We all get the slump. I went through one about a month ago, but then all of a sudden I had to sit down and make a list of post ideas because they all came to me at once and I was worried I would forget them! Usually I’m a lot more vague, it’s either “oh yeah, that’s a good song, I’ll write about that soon” or “hmm haven’t done a post for a couple of days, quick, better find something” but I think I had ten ideas jotted down in good ol’ notepad (now there’s a program that works first time, every time, unlike stupid Itunes!) and that kept me going for a good week.

So yes, I guess my point is… hang in there! Something will pop up and get you going again soon.
