One of my favorite local bands, A Lull, is out in NYC right now and I’m so jealous and also so damn happy for them, all at the same time. Before they left, I caught their show at the Metro, a very cool place to play, (the place where the huge indie bands play, like Metric and Grizzly Bear, and Sunny Day Real Estate). A Lull did a great set, along with three other local bands on a Friday night. It was the third time I’ve seen them. I’m not sure they will ever manage to surpass the first time I unknowingly ran into them at Schubas. There’s nothing like being blown away when you least expect it. But they manage to play quite often. And when they take the stage, they TAKE the stage, I mean they own it. It’s not just that there’s seven of them. It’s not that they’ve got two drum kits and a variety of other drums on stage, including a large bass drum on a stand and another deeper, taller one across the stage standing up the other way. This group likes the beat. And for each outrageously intense and bombastic climax in their music, there are moments of keenly beautiful vocals. Nigel Dennis takes the lead, approaching the mic only when he’s good and ready. The energy is amazing as the others join in. Check out the preview of their show, here, in the Village Voice. Pretty cool, guys! xoxo

I haven’t figured these guys out yet. I’ll have to live with them a bit more before I declare which side I will fall. Interesting though.
Well, it’s the kind of band that also needs careful production in order to translate well to a recording. Live, they blow you away when they’re on the right stage with a good crowd. The EP they have available now is a year or so old, at least and their new stuff is almost done! So hang on, buddy, don’t decide yet!
