There was a great comment in an article I was reading around the time, relating to Bill Berry leaving the band.

It said - to paraphrase - that Bill Berry was never the most pyrotechnic of drummers, but was certainly the 'anchor' of the band, and that an anchor doesn't have to be flashy or the centre of attention, it just needs to be heavy and have two sticky-out bits to do its job well!

Good call on the drummer Dylan. Changed the bands whole dynamic.
From my playing experience I could say musicians feel like they need to progress and change. It's a lot of that stumbling around that leads you back to what was fun to play and made you sound the best.

Well I think Up is REM's best album - sonically rich, lyrically deep, moving and experimental. For me that was their last good record. And since then Michael Stipe has been their only saving grace. His effort is always exemplary when it sounds like Mills and Buck are treading water, trying to recreate something that they ought to leave in the past.

Do you think the recent stuff was excessively Stipe-driven?

I think it suffered more from Mills and Buck getting all noodley and experimental, and forgetting how to be a rock band after Bill Berry left.

I've recounted this opinion before on other blogs (that shalt not be mentioned here!) but I think REM released one great album between 1998 and 2004, the problem being they spread that one great album out over three LPs.

That's all it takes, isn't it Andrew? And yeah, Reconstruction is my fave too... they were always just a really hard-working band that delivered, respectable, and solid.

Another great power trio. Buck always had great guitar work. Simple, but catchy with no boring power chords. I have always tried to emulate that model of rhythm/lead guitar. Not flashy, just solid with volume in the right places for punch. The Smiths, Sundays, 10,000 Maniacs, etc have a similar guitar style.

Reconstruction of the fables would be my favorite from REM.
