I stumbled across The Depreciation Guild’s new single, “Dream About Me” last night and the second I laid eyes on that video I fell hard and fast in love with this trio from Brooklyn. The sound, the look, the feel of this shoegazy, poppy, smooth song was just too much for my addled brain at 1 a.m. and I immediately sent an email off to the PR folks at Tell All Your Friends to get the embed code so that you could see this video right here on the pages of LSB. I mean, that is a gorgeous thing, isn’t it, darlings? Wow!
Their debut album, In Her Gentle Jaws, self-released in December 2007, is being remastered and re-released on vinyl, with a digital download by Kanine Records in the fall. Christoph Hochheim and Kurt Feldman (who you might know as members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) are joined by Christoph’s twin brother Anton on drums to create an entirely different sound; one that is achingly both retro hip and modern cool. Oh yeah, they combine 8-bit and “laptop pop,” whatever that is. Supposedly that is what all the fuss should be about. For me, however, it just sounds like some of the great 80s music I listened to back in the day combined with today’s pop/synth sound. When you hear a song like “Parasol Parachute” does it really matter what you call it in the end?
buy “Dream About Me” (7″ White Vinyl B/W “Listless”)
edit: I just heard from their PR they’re ready to record their second full-length this summer with Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv at the helm. Sweet!
