So tune in tomorrow or Sunday when it’s replayed, it promises to be another joyous occasion with the irrepressible Lloyd Robson (who I’d really love to hear more from, god… he sounds so yummy!) And you just might find this song,  The Cutter by Echo and the Bunnymen*, on tomorrow’s show ;) xoxoxo

Patrick Wolf: “Who Will (Buffetlibre Remix)”

nonameOk, so I’ve had a crap day… smashed building, lost checks, digging through garbage cans and having to fess up to wife and boss of my fuck ups… god, I need to let loose a bit tonight in the worst fucking way! And what comes into my mailbox just now?? Well, if you don’t know about the wonderful DJs Buffetlibre you should be ashamed of yourselves. They have taken the best popular songs and remixed them in ways that make you just have to get off the couch and move. This Patrick Wolf song Who Will starts out nice and easy and works you up to just the right level after a hectic Friday, it’s mastered by Sidechains, another of my faves.  The cool artwork over there is by Roboto. So enjoy this for now, my darlings! Maybe after a bubble bath I’ll be ready for some more serious get down music. xoxo
Coming soon: Patrick Wolf – Who Will (Buffetlibre Radio Edit) , Patrick Wolf – Who Will (Buffetlibre Dub Version)

The Ropes: Clubs In Europe Forever

theropesThe Ropes caught my eye awhile ago with their single, “Be My Gun.” When they let go and get loud they really shine, I think. So go pop over to their MySpace and have a listen to “I Don’t Like to Get Dirty.” The kind of little-girl naivete in Sharon Shy’s voice when she sings up high is really nicely offset by some industrial sounding beats and guitar work. The rest is just blase enough to be a good mellow listen for one of those moods. Their new EP  Clubs in Europe Forever is out now, you can purchase it here.

An Horse kicks off new tour in Chicago @ Schubas, Sunday w/ Telekinesis

If you live in or near Chicago, my dear readers, you really need to get your sweet little behinds down to Schubas on Sunday and catch this show! An Horse is kicking off their new tour right here in our windy city with Telekinesis and in that cozy venue, they are gonna blow you away. Get tickets here, while they still have some. Buy tickets online for $8 or pay $10 at the door, 18+ show starts at 8:00 p.m. An Horse was recently featured in Rolling Stone as a “Breaking” artist, they are definitely on the rise! RS said their album sounds like, “A hooky heartbreak manifesto, with fuzzed-out riffs, snarling beats and clever shout-outs to ’90s alt-rock.” Folks, it just doesn’t get better than that.

Nickodemus: Sun People out 06/16

This is the kind of music that makes M.Chutney dance around the living room with delight. I absolutely can’t wait to give her this album, so shhhh! Don’t tell her! Nickodemus is a DJ that has taken his skills to a whole other level on this record. You might know about his long-running Turntables on the Hudson parties, but don’t think that’s the limit of Nicodemus’ talent! Incorporating music from all over the globe, he has mixed tunes from many artists: Guinean born singer Ismael Kouyate, Indian classical & pop singer Falu, Richard Shepherd of Radio Mundial, Brazilian born singer Liliana of the band Maracatu, the versatile voice of Nuriya, members of Taraf de Haidouks, and The New York Gypsy Allstars. Dance music can be boring and repetitive or it can be interesting and really fucking fun. This teaser track, from the album, is a tantalizing mix of gypsy sounds, featuring a flute or clarinet, a kanun (stringed instrument like an oud), some darbuka or goblet drums and modern dance beats.  Sun People is coming out June 16, I’m pre-ordering one, I encourage you to give this track a listen and see if you can keep from moving to it ;)

I don’t do this enough…

c22477There are so many good blogs out there, and it’s easy to get focused on what I want to write or what I feel you want to hear, that I sometimes don’t get around to reading my friends nearly as often as I wish I did. So, it’s high time I highlighted one that is really outstanding. You really should go peek over at Sunset Over Slawit where Rol has reviewed Chuck Klosterman’s book, CK IV: A Decade Of Curious People And Dangerous Ideas. I breezed through Rol’s post happily, reminded of his previous review of Fargo Rock City and how it made me want to put that book on my xmas list. But this one seemed to be a little less interesting, more generally “men’s writing,” and then whamo! Rol hit me with this quote:

Here’s the first step to happiness: don’t get pissed off that people who aren’t you happen to think Paris Hilton is interesting and deserves to be on TV every other day; the fame surrounding Paris Hilton is not a reflection on your life (unless you want it to be). Don’t get pissed off because the Yeah Yeah Yeahs aren’t on the radio enough; you can buy the goddamn record and play ‘Maps’ all goddamn day (if that’s what you want)…

Basically, don’t get pissed off over the fact that the way you feel about culture isn’t some kind of universal consensus. Because if you do, you will end up feeling betrayed. And it will be your own fault.

Now doesn’t that just fucking sum up what I have been rambling on about for awhile? I love it when somebody just encapsulates the point of the argument so succinctly. Tolerance, darlings… It’s what’s for breakfast. xoxo

“(Don”t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below We’re All Going To Go” Curtis Mayfield …..Curtis!, 1970… and I add the date there to qualify the words (namely the “n” word, among others) he uses in this song, please do remember the time and meaning they held then as opposed to now.

“Taste” Animal Collective…. BBC Maida Vale Studio, I’m pretty sure I got this track over here, at The Road 2 Nowhere which is a rather nice music blog and has an explaination for the whole song.

ACID TED: Frenchbloke Goes Pop, a mixtape to benefit Children’s Brain Tumor Research

coverDarlings! This is not a regular feature here on Love Shack, Baby, but it is a favor to a very cool London blogger and person I admire so very much on these internet seas. Some of you might remember back in January, Ctel, otherwise known as ACID TED, put out a call for donations to his charities of choice, namely those who research and develop cures for brain tumors in children. This is quite a personal issue for Ctel, his story can be found here (I warn you, it will break your heart to read). And he’s coupled his commitment to the issue with his love of Techno and Rave music. This is the second time a well-known DJ has donated his skills. Please do consider helping out. You will receive an amazing gift in return: the knowledge that you are helping children and their families in real need as well as a very, very, cool and exclusive mixtape.

what follows is directly from Ctel’s blog

At the start of the year I had an exclusive mix for you. And now I have another. This time, bootleg legend Frenchbloke has prepared an exclusive 45 minute pop mix for ACID TED. This is not available in the shops or anywhere else. As last time, I am asking for something from you in return. If you have Soundhog’s mix, you need this one to complete your perfect virtual C90 mixtape.

For those of you who haven’t come across Frenchbloke (or Stuart McLean); his last.fm biog says simply “Frenchbloke, real name Stuart McLean, born Glasgow 1968, is among the bastard-pop class of 2001/2002.” That doesn’t really give you a sense of how important he is. Frenchbloke has been responsible for some of the best mixes I have heard, spanning early eighties indie to mid eighties pop to early nineties techno. And he was in under-rated Tauchseider. But around 2006 he dropped off the internet. No more posting to forums, no more website. So, I’m thrilled that he’s come back for this mix.

Frenchbloke decided it was going to be a proper pop mix. It is an astonishing mix of tracks. Not just the tracks themselves but they way that they have been chopped up and reassembled in Frenchbloke’s inimitable style. You really won’t find it anywhere else. And if you want to know how Frenchbloke made it you must look here. The mind of a bastard pop genius exposed and his grunbles about RATM’s drummer.

I’d like others to benefit from the time that Stuart has put in. In particular, to raise money for research on brain tumours in children. If you want a copy of the mix, there are a couple of ways to donate:

1. Use ACID TED’s donate button on the sidebar (via PayPal). And I will use your email details to send you the link.

2. Give directly to the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (UK) by donating here or Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation (USA) here or to a children’s cancer charity in your own country. Once you have done so, you will get an emailed reply from them. Forward that email to me (see side bar) Forward ACID TED your email and I will send you a link to the mix.

Please donate. How much you donate is up to you (£5 = US$7 / EUR6). Brain tumours are the commonest solid tumours in children in the UK and USA. More children now die from a brain tumour than any other childhood cancer. If you need to know why these charities are so important, see my story here or little Thomas’ story here.

Finally, if any readers are bloggers themselves, could you please promote this mix on your sites. It’s in a good cause. Thank you.

And dear readers, have a listen to this little gem Let’s Go To Bed (Milk Mix) that I picked up off of The Vinyl Villain‘s wonderful blog. Thanks JC and welcome home! …. I’m off to bed to nurse this head/chest cold I picked up from going to too many gigs last week, xoxox
