Legion Within: Mouth of Madness released 06/16

mom_coverDamn, I missed another new release! Did you know the Tart has a special place in her heart for industrial, dark, gothic rock? Yes, as much as I love sweet gooey love songs, I really need a jolt of this on a regular basis. Legion Within is just the shot we all need in times like these. Their fourth album, Mouth of Madness came out on June 16 and I’m listening to it now with great curiosity. Give “Mouth Of Madness” a listen; be drawn into their synthy goodness, their bleak, dramatic vocals.

This is a band that wears their influences on their sleeve. You can hear David Bowie, Bauhaus, Gary Numan, Love & Rockets, The Chameleons, Brian Eno, and Pink Floyd in these songs. Yet none mirror any particular influence. William Wilson, the creative force behind the lyrics of Mouth of Madness, gives these songs a darkly political immediacy, fitting for the recent economic downturn and resulting collective despair. The band’s bio describes him as “graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a double major in Political Science and Film/Media Studies. The double major was borne from his inability to escape awareness of the manipulation and control via The Media that feeds into political corruption and oppression. Wilson expresses these frustrations and passions fluidly thru Legion Within’s music.” Indeed, these are not pointless lyrics, though they might be a bit tongue in cheek.

lw_group_1With 10 tracks, Legion Within presents a variety of tracks on Mouth of Madness within which to lose yourself on a cool, dark evening. “Memories of You” is perhaps, my favorite song. It blends soaring synthesized sound with Wilson’s droning, deep voice into a velvety love song. Yeah, I guess even with my self-confessed need to escape them, I can’t tear myself away from love songs. But it’s really “Mall Cops of Freedom” that catches my attention with it’s quasi-rockabilly riffs and that smooth deep voice delivering biting sarcasm in a perfectly Cruella De Vil way. Opening track, “Someone’s Speaking” will find its way onto dancefloors this year, no doubt. It’s everything there is to love about techno/goth music.

Anna Ternheim on tour this Fall, album release in the US 8/11

AnnaTerheimIf you’ve  heard Anna Ternheim’s Leaving on a mayday, you’ll be excited to know that she’ll be the special guest on the co-headlining Loney Dear / Asobi Seksu tour.  Leaving on a mayday makes it’s US debut on August 11. From Stockholm, Anna will be hitting 14 cities in the US and Canada. I don’t have a mp3 for you today but she’s got quite a bit of music to hear on her Facebook page, so hop over there.  And look at this pared down, simple video. It shows her lovely voice off nicely, eh?

Benjy Davis Project: Dust

Well this one escaped my notice last year! Hopefully you didn’t miss it because Benjy Davis Project’s Dust is a beautiful, Southern ode to love. Is that a corny intro for this review? Perhaps, but once you hear it you’ll agree with me that this collection of songs keeps your mind on love in the most delicious manner. Dust has 13 tracks to showcase Benjy Davis’ talent and that of his band. They needed that many, or more, to contain the wide range of musical styles and affinities they hold. Just when you think a song is straight up new-country someone plucks a string and turns the whole thing around into an indie-pop thing of beauty. From “Sweet Southern Moon” which recounts the quintessential coming of age moment, to the heart-wrenching, final track “Over Me,” Benjy Davis covers the gamut of love’s effects on the human condition.

His voice has such a sweet timbre to it, cracking on just the right high notes in an endearing way, and Maggie Brown as guest soloist on “Graves” is the perfect partner to it. Even though many of these songs focus on the nostalgia of lost or undeserved love, you can’t help but yearn for the next one to start. “I Love You” is probably the centerpiece, for me, of this record. Helpless in the face of a force stronger than him, Benjy belts out these lyrics and hooks you in. Yeah, it’s this melody and the lyrics: “I love you deeper than I can swim. Feel my lungs caving in. Nobody’s saving me now,” that runs through my mind long after the music has stopped.

At last there’s a record with guitar solos! “Same Damn Book” delivers that 70s feel with a gorgeous guitar solo fade out. “Who’s God” features an entirely different one; shorter and less prominent but equally good. The slide guitar moments of this album are snuck in here and there, momentarily stealing your attention away from the rest of the song. Even with this many tracks, you don’t want it to stop. But this record ends on a tender, sad song with its final note just hanging there. “Be over Sunday to cut myself out of your heart. I’ll start with the things that remind you of me, and move on.” And you know he might try to carry through with this, but you really hope he doesn’t. We need another Benjy Davis Project record next year; thankfully, I don’t think he’ll ever come to terms with love.bdp_group

Eaten By Monsters: Scaring the Pets EP

Eaten by Monsters is a duo out of London that has released their second EP, Scaring the Pets. It’s got me a bit perplexed… and that’s a good thing. I like being jarred a little by music. It gets quite boring listening to the same jingle jangle indiecrap all the time. You know I’m not really an indie girl anyway. Well, this EP really is an indie record, it’s got that hollow drum beat, that meager guitar strumming, a bit of cymbal clashing here and there, and lovelorn lyrics. What Scaring the Pets doesn’t have is that spineless whimpering vocal and nearly soul crushing whining that you get with songs about sexual hangups and kissing your friends, awkward interpersonal moments, and the inevitable mishaps which ensue. So “indie without the indie” is how I might categorize this unique EP.

You see, Eaten by Monsters gives us four strong songs to think about, spit out from the mouth of Tom Hazledine in a snarly, Art Brut-ish sort of way. Nope, I confess, I don’t care much for Art Brut. In fact that band is my current whipping boy for all that is wrong with indie pop music. It’s false and put on and Eddie Argos’ exaggeratedly accented “singing” is turning a generation of musicians’ heads in an altogether wrong direction. Add to that absolutely ridiculous lyrics with all too obvious hooks (how many Replacements songs have 20 somethings downloaded due to that stupid song?) Maybe that’s why I hate on Art Brut. They’re giving the Replacements such a backhanded compliment and the ‘Mats deserve so much more from so much better.

But we were discussing Eaten by Monsters, weren’t we?!? Yes, you might feel an affinity between Eddie Argos and this singer. I hope you do not, though. It’s quite insulting to even mention that band next to Eaten by Monsters and I’m already sorry I’ve put that thought into your head. So Tom and Andy, forgive me please! You should know that I love your EP. I liked it at first listen, smiled a whole lot at second and third listen, and by fourth listen… well, it was love.

Darling readers, hear this EP. Pay attention to the wonderful rise and fall in the opening track, “Bedroom Nerves” and once you hear the way that drum beat accentuates the phrasing of that interesting voice I think you’ll like this as much as I do. The violins on track two set you up for some real sweet lyrics. It’s not exactly what you get, however, and I love those dark twists so much. “So Sorry” and the brilliant “Let The Dischord Carry You Home” round out this EP, but not before my favorite track, ”Friends Who Kiss” Is it true that “friends who kiss are not friends at all?” I have to say, that’s a question that’s worth asking.

The Appleseed Cast @The Subteranean this Friday, June 26

1069_the_applesThe Appleseed Cast is coming to Chicago to play at the Sub-T on tomorrow night and as luck would have it, my sweetie, MChutney has tickets for us to go to Ravinia and see The Indigo Girls! Well that’s a Sophie’s Choice, isn’t it, just? You all left here in town really should go out to see them anyway, even without my lovely company. They’re out to show you just how good their new album, Sagarmatha really is. You know this band has been around since 1997, and they are solidly good. If you’ve not heard their dulcet, (dare I say shoegazy?) indie sound yet you really should. I quite agree with their label when they say, “I think they are best described as weavers: of sounds beautiful and horrible, always intriguing, and of stories in sometimes inscrutable but always evocative lyrics.” I’ve had Sagarmatha on my iphone mix for the past month or so and really hope I can clear my desk soon to get a review in for you. It’s a beautiful album.
Brighton, MA (yes, that’s the name of the supporting band, not the place where anyone is from as far as I know) who have a lovely Daytrotter session over here, featuring the lovely “Not Our Fault” are supporting them Friday night. They are very much worth a listen as well! And our own local Hotel Ahead provide the warm up set at 9:00 so get there on time!

Wherein the Tart is (somewhat) revealed…

Eeek! I’ve been revealed. Or should I say I’ve been revealing ;)

bothOver on the Contrast Podcast, Tim, the brain behind that wonderful enterprise, has just finished up the Third Annual CD Swap. You make a mixtape for someone (Tim tells you who) and you get a mixtape from someone else in return. It all works kind of like a secret Santa thing. You don’t know who’s making your mix tape until you get it in the mail. Yesterday Tim surprised us and posted the first half of the results right over here.

The Contrast Podcast is in itself a huge amount of fun to participate in. Usually all you do is pick a song to go with the weekly theme (chosen by Tim) and record a short introduction to go with it. Tim then compiles them all into a podcast of about an hour long and each week we get to hear a variety of music from a variety of bloggers from all over the world. I’ve gotten to know some very cool folks and some amazing music over there!

Now this week, the CD Swap week, we were each asked to introduce our favorite track from the CD we received. My pick is featured along with 12 others. That’s revealing enough… but in addition to this, for the special annual occasion of this event, Tim requested a photo of us with the CD we received from our secret swap partner. A photo?!? Eeek… how was I gonna pull that off and remain my anonymous self? Well, luckily the song I chose to introduce, “Titties (largin it mix)”, my favorite track from the wonderful CDs (yes I got two!) from FiL from pogoa go-go, was rather naughty. Oh he knows me so well. So, I was able to er,… illustrate my song photographically without revealing my identity too, too much ;) Go have a peek at all the pictures submitted from the Contrast Podcast swappers, here, including mine, and do consider contributing to the Contrast Podcast yourself. Do you know the label, Filthy Little Angels? Well you should! I found them last xmas season on my mission to bring you the naughtiest xmas songs on the internet. They are a truly independent record label based in the UK and have a whole slew of little often unnoticed bands on their hands who are really producing some fun and good music. If you’ve enjoyed my post on Projekt A-Ko you’ve already seen a product of FLA. Well today I bring you some Hyperbubble, who are moving on to Bubblegum records. Hyperbubble still have their record  Airbrushed Alibis at Filthy Little Angels’ shop so go pick it up there while it lasts! You’ll find great tracks like “Synesthesia” on it. And over on Hyperbubble‘s official site you’ll find remixes like “Synesthesia (Neuromix)” so make sure to go check them out, there’s even more available for download.

Also in stock at Flithy Little Angels, The Lovely Eggs, “I Like Birds (But I Like Other Animals Too)” which you might have heard over on The Waiting Room on WOXY.com as Drunk Country and TWoTh (The Woman of The House) have been featuring them lately. Elizabeth & The Catapult: New Video for “Taller Children”

Taller_Children_Cover__300RGBThis is a pretty catchy pop tune from Elizabeth & The Catapult, “Taller Children” and there’s a cool new video. At least I was given permission to give ya the track, eh? If you like Fiest, you’ll dig this, says Spin.com. This trio from NYC is hitting the road this summer to support their album, named… you guessed it, Taller Children! Together since 2004, the trio features Elizabeth, a classically trained pianist who writes these beautiful pop songs. Their first EP made a name for them locally along with their live shows and this album brings them to a wider audience. I might just have to go check them out in July! O’death @the Empty Bottle 06/20

OD_MV_MG_3178Have you heard O’death‘s album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin? It came out in October of last year and it’s been on constant rotation at Chez Tart ever since. It’s been characterized as “a giddy junkyard hoedown” that’s part gospel, part punk, part Americana. I’ve heard the phrase “you’ve not really heard O’death until you’ve heard them live” and was hoping that it wasn’t just talk. Well, my darling readers, let me tell you. It. Wasn’t. Just. Talk.

Oh no… this band was more than amazing on stage. My blog buddy, Autopsy IV over at the fantastic blog ninebullets.net (and why don’t I have that linked up on here!?! gotta remedy that) had told me to not miss this band when they came through. I’d heard their show was “frantic and sweaty” and that doesn’t begin to describe the controlled chaos that happened last night! Opening with ”Lowtide” and closing with “Angeline” and a cover of the Pixies “Nimrod’s Son” almost an hour and a half later, this gang of five crazed and exhausted men stumbled off stage to greet their fans. In that hour and a half the adoring audience danced, and moshed, and jumped the stage to pour beer down the gullet of Newman, the bass player and toast Greg Jamie the lead vocalist with glasses of whiskey. I’ve never seen a band have so many drinks bought for them while on stage! They had to negotiate with the sound man as to how many encores they could play; there was simply no way this audience was going to let them off without at least two. We all left the scene that night, exhilarated and more than a little hoarse from hooting after every song.

I swear I saw an upturned gasoline can as part of David Rogers-Berry’s drum kit. There were definitely chains and bells and plenty of sticks… when he took the stage he brought with him an arsenal of backup sticks and I think he used every single one! Standing atop his stool he egged the crowd on, growling and gesturing wildly as he sang along. This man is a true showman, and when not required to actually beat his drums he twirls his sticks like a girl with a baton in a high school marching band. There were constant adjustments to his cymbals and stands, which with the force of his insane drumming were constantly knocked over and flung askew, and yet he rarely missed a beat. What a pro, and such energy. As the base energy of this band, Rogers-Berry provides a seemingly un-ending supply of enthusiasm.

Newman, on bass, is his perfect counterpart. Smiling a mile wide for most of the show, even before the beer and whiskey began to flow, he suffered through two instrument failures. The poor man seemed cursed that night! Abandoning one bass after a broken string (maybe two?) he waded through the crowd to fetch another which lasted until the final song before giving out completely. Some onstage tweaking proved successful and mid-song he joined in time for a raucous ending. When not playing electric bass, Newman provided vocals and general mayhem, reminding me of the Greek god Pan; he just had that wicked, keen look in his eye, yummy!

Gabe Darling plays banjo, ukulele and guitar and sings harmony in such a beautiful way. His intros to songs such as “A Light That Does Not Dim” and “Only Daughter” make them unmistakable favorites. He sang beautiful harmonies, played just crazy-fast and looked to be having the time of his life with his bandmates. I can’t stress enough how talented this man is and how amazed I was to see him keep this ridiculously frenzied pace and keep it in tune and in time! I can’t imagine this band without him, and frankly, without any of its five members.

One of the most characteristic sounds in O’death is the frenetic fiddling of Bob Pycior. His electric fiddle playing has to be seen to be believed. Honestly, I could never convince you that a man could dance and writhe and thrash to the music and fiddle at the same time as Pycior does unless you’ve seen him do it. It’s amazing. It’s crazed, even possessed you might say. After one song the shirt came off; this is one sweaty affair. He fiddles fast, so fast that your ears can’t even hear it all at once and then as the song slows he plays these long plaintive notes that make you ache. Along with Greg Jaimie’s voice which takes on a high pitched whine at times, the wicked fiddling whips the crowd into such a frenzy. Everyone up front danced with everyone, not caring who they came with that night, it was at once a communal affair, joined together by this orgy of music. And Jaime’s voice… strong, controlled, capable of that screeching whine and also beautiful tenor tones, played guitar almost incidentally; his voice is his true instrument. He provided some light banter between songs, not too much. This was their first show on this tour, having had to cancel two nights ago in Austin. I figured there might be a few cobwebs to kick out, and if there were, they sure didn’t show it. Only one false start on “A Light That Does Not Dim” for which Jaimie apologized saying “Well that’s embarrassing, for us, in a good way!” And lots of thanks for being such an appreciative crowd. I think they were truly grateful to have an audience that sang, no.. shouted, along and danced their asses off. And here I was just complaining the other day on Twitter about Chicago audiences. Well shame on me! This night proved me very, very wrong, I’m happy to report.

Do go and see O’death when they come near you, they’re currently touring with Les Claypool and continuing on with him through July. Opening for O’death were Balmorhea, a beautiful orchestral folk group. You’ll be hearing more from this band for sure. Go to their MySpace for a taste, they reminded me a bit if an acoustic version of Broken Records. I spoke briefly with Rob who told me they had just finished a session at Daytrotter, so be on the lookout for that. Coming out of Austin, this sextuplet is also on the road this summer, with Tiny Vipers. Balmorhea are promoting their new CD, All is Wild All is Silent. Buy it here !

Bombadil: Tarpits and Canyonlands out 7/7

tarpitscoverI couldn’t be sure that I loved this record simply on the grounds that it was truly a genius collection of songs, tenderly arranged, and wonderfully presented. Or was it that I happened to listen to this record when I was feeling quite happy with my life? Would these fifteen tracks withstand my occasional bouts with mundane tragedy? After hearing that the planter I crumpled with my car while backing out of a driveway last week will now cost me over $1k to replace, with mixed feelings,  I can confidently report that yes, indeed, Bombadil‘s Tarpits and Canyonlands is a record to love in good times and bad. It went into my ears the moment I got the news and I played it over and over that day and every day since, and every day before that,  since it arrived in my post box.

I honestly am obsessed with these songs. And I say that because they are songs, not parts of a big story like some groups have been doing with albums. No, Bombadil have put out beautiful, folksy, sing-a-long songs. They’re little packets of musical wonder, full up with guitars and piano and tambourines and three guys singing at the top of their lungs. You see, Bryan, Daniel and James’ album has been described as their “Broadway” album, in that there’s lots of emphasis on vocals, like in a musical. And that nails it right on the head. And for a band that’s named after a hobbit, no, I’ve been corrected, Tom Bombadil was emphatically not a hobbit, but the oldest being, perhaps an angel or even god, according to wiki (thanks Charles!)  Tarpits and Canyonlands does have a fantastical feel to it and yet it also seems quite cozy — down to earth, with such earnest and tender voices. But in a truly Southern way, this record is equally as dark and bitter as it is light and fun. Some of these songs have skeletons rattling around in their closets… I just feel it.

The fanciful first, then we’ll tackle the dark. It’s a little hard to describe but how else can one take lyrics such as these…

brought by the idea that souls can be shook

…and make them into a magical song with soaring vocals and a maddeningly changing tempo. The percussion, that is so characteristic of Bombadil, is what drives this song to utter brilliance. It’s a rather simple melody, wrapped around  words that halfway make a story, all sung with an affected aristocratic accent and high pitched backing vocals. But the piano keys are struck forcefully and the drumming is comprised of both high hat bass drum and some sort of small clicky sounding thing (canastas?) none of which are played at the same time very much. By alternating the percussion this way the song is light and bounces along nicely, carried by the interplay of vocals with words which are almost secondary. It’s lovely.oto

However, the shining star of this album, for me, has to be “Sad Birthday” because it is so whimsical and just so very wrong. Handclaps, mad crazy piano bashing, and a wonderful build that is accentuated by something that must be a dying whale; it’s soooo sad! You find yourself elated by the tune, curious over that low, sad noise and then wondering who is this person who’s birthday was forgotten? It’s dreadful and hilarious and wonderful! [edit: I've heard from Bryan who tells me the source of those mysterious whale sounds, "that's Daniel playing the bass with an improvised slide, plus whale sonar (the phone ringing type sound) from a broken synthesizer setting." How cool is that, darlings!?!]

Don’t write this record off as just some indie kids pot-induced silliness though! Not all songs are touched by fancy, remember what I said about the dark, brooding, bitterness. “Matthew” is a beautiful song, and a simple vehicle for stark memories of an old and not always kind friend. With only piano and voice, the barest whisper of harmony here and there, this tune is emotionally sharp if you really listen to the words, yet has such a sweet and infectious melody. Like others on this record, it’s as if Bombadil want to feed us poisoned lollipops and see how many licks it takes before we taste the bitter center. The guitar and piano dance on “Honeymoon,” another favorite song of mine. Strings take over halfway through and the resulting crescendo is fucking fantastic.Turn this one up, then once you’ve listened to it a few times go back and hear the lyrics. As high as you feel from the clashing of cymbals. and strings and piano chords and snare drum, you will feel equally low from the lyrics:

your life is books you never wrote
and tote only for money

dig a hole into the ground
and pound the earth in outrage

your life is treasures that you’ve found
and drowned in lakes that you’ve made

show the soul you never had
a fad that will not save you

your life is hiding all the bad
and sad smiles that break you

See how they play with our hearts? Any record that can make me hate myself and love the world and its musicians at the same time is sure to make my year end list. This is a solid piece of art by any measurement.

And thread throughout this record are songs about marriage. Daniel reports that he began writing a song for friends who were marrying and couldn’t stop at just one. Soon he had four, they’ve made it onto Tarpits and Canyonlands, thankfully, providing counterweight to the heady and the dark, already mentioned in this review. “Reasons” is one that will without a doubt find it’s way onto many wedding CDs. “Cold Runaway” is a bit more musically complex and full of that crazy loud-then-soft percussion they do so well, and with slide whistle (!) Then comes the final track, a straight up beautiful folk tune, “Kate and Kelsey” sweetly sung. And well, that one just makes me ache to go back and listen to my old Simon and Garfunkel records again. It’s nothing like them mind you, only the same type of song you’d find on Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme; and it’s a fitting end to this beautiful collection.

Darlings, you really need to add this album to your collection. Listen to it in the car on a long drive; you’ll find yourself singing along in no time. Listen to it to hear the way Bombadil has worked the piano bits in and out of a song in just the right amount and let the guitar carry the rest along. Hear how that mad drummer does that tricksy thing he does and make it look so easy. Oh and I didn’t even begin to tell you about “Laurita” sung all in Spanish! It’s awesome. Are there songs that are less wonderful than others on Tarpits and Canyonlands? Yes, I’d rank “25 Daniels” as not quite as shiny, but it’s a fitting song for it’s subject, punctuated with horns and tambourines and solid harmonies. “Kuala Lampur” is a song I try to not care for, but damn it’s catchy! Ask me again in six months and I am betting I’ll still be enthusiastic over this record. It’s is a wonderful achievement for Bombadil. Tarpits and Canyonlands has not ceased to make me smile and I think it never will. xoxox

Sadly, Bombadil have had to cancel their tour to promote this record due to health reasons. Daniel’s suffering tendinitis and the rest of the band felt it wasn’t right to go on without him. I know they probably wouldn’t ask, but I will… it’s a lot easier to sell an album when people can go hear you play it and fall in love with it in person. So if you like what you hear please buy it and then do tell someone about it, eh? xoxobombadil
